Guantanamo. — The VIII International Seminar on Peace and for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases began this Saturday in the city and will hold its work sessions in the halls of the Mariana Grajales Coello Revolution Square, ACN reported.

Some 80 participants from 25 countries will attend the event, including academics, union leaders, pacifists and friends of Cuba. On the first day, the event program includes a floral offering to Mariana Grajales, mother of Los Maceo, a bicycle ride for peace and a poster exhibition.

After being welcomed by regional authorities, the historian of the city of Guantánamo, José Sánchez Guerra, will share an update on the province, in a conference.

The president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González, and the executive secretary of the World Peace Council (WPC), Iraklis Tsavdaridis, will also speak at the opening of the seminar.

There will also be dozens of presentations on the harmful effects of the North American military presence in Cuba, at the US naval base in Guantánamo Bay, which has been against the will of its people for more than 120 years. And the unwanted presence, in enclaves in Latin America and other parts of the world, of the US military.

On Sunday, the last day of the event, the participants will share a popular event with the residents of the municipality of Caimanera, where the minutes of the final declaration will be read.

The Seminar is sponsored by the ICAP and the CMP, it has been held biannually since the end of the first decade of this century in Guantánamo, to demand the elimination of the more than 800 foreign bases and facilities in our region and throughout the world, the cessation of the arms race and weapons of mass extermination promoted by US imperialism and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

These demands include the end of the massacre of Palestinians by the Israeli Zionist government with the help of the US, and other Western countries, the end of the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba and the withdrawal of the Caribbean nation from the misleading list of countries that support terrorism.

The forum also analyzes the challenges and threats facing world peace as the so-called cyber war advances, aimed at imposing an international cultural and political change in favor of the hegemonic interests of the United States and its acolytes, as a new type of war. non-conventional.
