In an effort to support thousands of Colombians residing in the United Kingdom, Senator Roy Barreras announced that he is working to facilitate a bilateral agreement with this country that allows citizens to add the quoted years in both retirement systems.
This agreement, if completed, would benefit about fifty thousand Colombian workers.

Barreras, who used his official X account to share progress in this regard, stressed that this plan seeks to ensure that “The time they work in the United Kingdom can be added to the quotes they have in Colombia to complete their pension time in the two countries”.
As detailed, the objective is to protect the rights of expatriates and provide greater economic security for their future.
“We work today to achieve a binational agreement,” said Barreras, who emphasized the importance of advancing in these efforts together with officials of the British Social Security System.
The senator described the dialogue with the authorities of the United Kingdom as promising, stressing that this agreement would allow greater cohesion among the pension systems of both countriesthus improving the conditions of migrant workers.
This agreement would aim to solve a common problem among citizens who migrate for work reasons: the difficulty of unifying their contributions in different pension systems.
Currently, those who have worked in more than one country face complications to add the times worked in each territory, which harms their pension projections due to the minimum requirements required by systems to retire.
According to Barreras in its publication, it was part of a meeting with British officials specialized in Social Security, where possible mechanisms were discussed to ensure that the quoted years can be transferred between Colombia and the United Kingdom.
In the words of the senator, “today in meeting with the British officials in charge of the Social and Pension System we advance in that purpose”, a gesture that highlights the mutual commitment by both governments to overcome these challenges.
