Jason Kidd signed a multi-year contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced Monday.

The deal comes just days after ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that Kidd’s name had been mentioned as a potential candidate for head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, a position left vacant when the team fired Darvin Ham.

Kidd, 51, is coming off his third season as Mavericks coach, a season in which he led the team to the Southwest Division title. In two of his three seasons, he has coached the team to more than 50 wins (52 in 2021-22 and 50 in 2023-24) and playoff series. Kidd led the Mavs to the Western Conference finals in 2022.

“We are excited for Coach Kidd to continue leading our team for years to come with this well-deserved contract extension,” said Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont. “Kidd led our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons, and we look forward to his leadership as we continue to build and grow this great franchise.”

“I have known Jason for a long time and I cannot think of a better, more qualified candidate to lead this team in the future,” added general manager Nico Harrison. “As a former NBA Hall of Fame champion, Jason brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this role that cannot be duplicated. He has earned the trust and respect of our players and many across the league. and I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to build on the culture and foundation of success he has helped foster during his tenure as head coach.”
