EsCiclismo.com · Road Competition · 05/09/2024

The Giro d’Italia presents today, Thursday, May 9, a demanding day in its sixth stage, which will take cyclists from the coastal Viareggio to Rapolano Terme, covering a distance of 180 kilometers. The stage is characterized by its 11.3 kilometers of route on gravel or ‘sterrato’ roads, adding a significant technical element that could be decisive in the outcome.

The stage begins in Viareggio, known for its festive atmosphere and stunning beaches, and heads inland, first tackling the Volterra Pass, a category 4 climb. After overcoming this challenge, the runners will face an undulating profile that offers no rest, with multiple ups and downs that will test the cyclists’ endurance.

One of the highlights of the stage will be the gravel section of Vidritta and Bagnaia, which includes slopes of up to 15%, followed by a third in Pievina, which runs along the ridge with continuous climbs and short descents. These sectors are critical and could cause important changes in the race, especially if weather conditions are adverse.

The final battle for stage victory will be fought in the last kilometers, which are full of curves and steep slopes, highlighting the climb to Serre di Rapolano with inclinations of up to 20% just before a final stretch of 450 meters on asphalt.

Rapolano Terme, the end of the stage, is a place of beauty and history, known for its thermal baths and its landscape of forested hills that are part of iconic Tuscany. Arriving here promises to be spectacular in every way.

Regarding the general classification, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) leads, closely followed by the Welshman Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) and the Colombian Daniel Felipe Martínez (Bora-Hansgrohe), 46 and 47 seconds behind the pink jersey. .

After the obligatory passage through the signature control and the protocol cutting of the ribbon, the platoon will depart from the Torre del Lago Puccini in Viareggio at 12:45 p.m. (CEST) and its arrival in Rapolano Terme is scheduled for around 5:00 p.m.: 1 p.m.
