ROME, Ga. – The 66th-ranked Old Dominion women’s tennis team opened Sun Belt Conference Tournament play on Friday morning with a 4-0 win over ninth-seeded Georgia State in the quarterfinals at the Rome Tennis Center.
With the win, ODU (15-5) advances to face 74th-ranked and fourth-seeded South Alabama (16-4) who defeated fifth-seeded Coastal Carolina 4-0 also on Friday.
“We had some early tournament jitters, but we worked through them and finished the day strong. I’m looking forward to a tough match against a strong and very well coached South Alabama team tomorrow in the semis,” said ODU Head Coach Dominic Manilla.
In doubles, the Monarchs took the team point with wins at the top two spots. Sofia Johnson and Lidiia Rasskouskaia opened with a 6-2 win over Alba Retortillo and Pragnya Kumar at the top spot. At number two, Alexandra Viktorovitch and Ulyana Romanova trailed 5-3 and rallied to force a tiebreaker where they jumped out 5-1 en route to a 7-6 (7-3) win and a 1-0 ODU lead.
In singles, ODU got wins from the three newcomers to the lineup for the 4-0 win. At number four, Rasskouskaia blanked Kumar 6-0, 6-0 and Kira Matushkina blanked Sara Radojevic 6-0, 6-0 at number five for a 3-0 lead. Romanova took the clinching point at number six with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sveva Bernardi.
