MADRID —

Real Madrid celebrated the victory of the Spanish League title this Sunday with a parade through the streets of the capital and looking forward to another celebration three weeks after the Champions League final.

The meringues secured their 36th League title last weekend, four dates in advance, but could not celebrate it immediately as they immediately had the second leg of the semifinals of the European tournament.

Madrid came back with two late goals from striker Joselu to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, certifying the 3-2 victory on aggregate to qualify for the final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1 in London. Madrid will seek to add the 15th European Cup to its showcases and extend the tournament record.

“We have less than three weeks left, we only have one important game left and we will prepare for it here. Hopefully we will celebrate again,” said Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos when addressing the crowd on Sunday.

Several thousand fans greeted the team on their tour of the city to culminate in the traditional site of their celebrations: the Plaza de Cibeles.

The Spanish champions trophy was presented to the team during a ceremony at their training facility.

Madrid usually celebrates its titles with the fans at the Bernabéu, but the stadium was reserved for a concert this Sunday.

The meringues beat relegated Granada 4-0 on Saturday. The Granada players made a corridor of honor for the champions before the start of the match.

This Sunday, most of the players and president Florentino Pérez addressed the public, who sang the club’s traditional songs. The rulers of the city and region of Madrid participated in the event.

“This team has overcome a situation that seemed irreversible,” declared Pérez, referring to a succession of injuries that affected several key players at the beginning of the season, including knee tears suffered by Thibaut Courtois, Eder Militao and David Alaba.

“It is very difficult to overcome the adversities we have suffered this season and this team has risen to the worst of football, which are injuries,” Pérez said. “Here are Militao, Courtois and Alaba, who have been an example of improvement.”

Captain Nacho Fernández led a round of applause for the three injured players.
