US President Joe Biden will meet with his aides at Camp David for several days to prepare to debate with his rival Donald Trump who is eschewing traditional preparation and instead holding informal political discussions between campaign stops.

The showdown in Atlanta will be the earliest presidential debate in modern American history and a critical event for both candidates.

Biden, 81, and former President Trump, 78, are tied in national opinion polls, with a considerable portion of the electorate still undecided five months before November 5 vote .

The debate will provide the starkest contrast yet between the two men, the oldest candidates to seek the US presidency, as voters question their age and mental acuity.

“It’s an incredible test of their cognitive competence,” said Patrick Stewart, a political science professor at the University of Arkansas who wrote a book on presidential debates. “This is our opportunity to see how much or if they have decreased.”

With strict limitations on speaking a note ban and no audience to cheer them on during CNN’s 90-minute debate, they will have to prepare for tough questions and a format that takes them out of their comfort zones, Stewart said.

Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. didn’t make the cut so Biden, a Democrat, and Trump, a Republican, won’t have to worry about him.

Ron Klain, Biden’s former chief of staff and debate preparation veteran, leads Biden’s sessions at Camp David, the mountain retreat in western Maryland where the president prepared for his impassioned speech on the State of the Union in March.

Date and time of the first Biden-Trump debate

It will be carried out Thursday, June 27 at 9 p.m. EDT.

New rules

Will have a duration of 90 minutes and will have two commercial breaks. Furthermore, they agreed new rules to avoid chaos and disruption between both candidates that characterized the debates of lpresidential campaign in 2020:

  • Both politicians’ microphones will be muted except when it is their turn to speak, ensuring each has their response time without blockages.
  • No written notes or props will be allowed in the place each politician occupies on stage.
  • Each candidate may only have one pen and one notebook to make notes during the debate.
  • In addition to the above, you will only be able to bring one bottle of water to stay hydrated during the event.
