Who could be Trump’s vice president?

Who could be Trump’s vice president?

Republican Donald Trump said this week that he would announce “fairly soon” the name of his vice presidential candidate for the November election.

Some names have been buzzing for weeks.

– Tim Scott –

Donald Trump likes the profile of Tim Scott, the African-American senator from South Carolina.

The former Republican president does not stop praising the loyalty of this 50-year-old man, a former candidate for the White House.

“You are a much better candidate for me than you have been for yourself,” he said at a rally.

With Tim Scott as his right-hand man, Trump could hope to win over black voters, who overwhelmingly preferred Joe Biden in the 2020 elections.

His detractors reproach the senator for his lack of magnetism, especially during debates.

-Doug Burgum-

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is unknown to the public.

But this is precisely what could attract Donald Trump, who is not used to being overshadowed by his lieutenants.

This sixty-year-old made his fortune as the head of a software company, which he sold to Microsoft for more than a billion dollars.

He then ran for governor of one of the country’s least populated states, next to Mount Rushmore, where the faces of former US presidents are carved in granite.

As governor, Doug Burgum enacted one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country, a decision that could backfire in this presidential campaign in which the issue of voluntary termination of pregnancy is very sensitive.

– J.D. Vance –

JD Vance, 39, has not been a fan of Donald Trump since his beginnings, something that the former Republican president reproaches him for.

But that doesn’t mean you have to delete it from the list.

This former military man and senator from Ohio, known for having published a best-selling book on the white working class in the United States, has only just entered politics but his profile is already arousing interest in Republican circles.

His ability to raise large sums of money for his party is especially striking. And this is important in a country where political victories are won with billions of dollars.

– Marco Rubio –

The relationship between Donald Trump and Marco Rubio has been strained in the past.

In the 2016 Republican primary, the Florida senator mocked the real estate magnate.

Since then, both seem to have buried the hatchet.

Donald Trump knows that he could take advantage of the profile of this 52-year-old senator, who is very involved in geopolitical issues and that could give him valuable support among Hispanic voters.

But a sector of the hard right has never forgiven him for his immigration reform proposal, presented more than ten years ago.

– Other possible candidates –

Other names that have been floated include New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, former Housing Minister Ben Carson and Senator Tom Cotton, but their chances seem limited for now.

So are those of businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Congressman Byron Donalds and former television presenter Kari Lake.

Contacted by AFP, Donald Trump’s entourage refused to give details about the profile he is looking for.

“Anyone who claims to know who or when President Trump will pick his vice president is lying,” one of his advisers said. “Unless that person’s name is Donald Trump.”
