With the documents he made public, perhaps the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, prevented many young Americans from dying when they were sent to foreign wars, in places that many did not even know how to identify on the map, as happened with Iraq.

They were not events described by the journalist himself. Neither do the photos taken by him at the scene of the events. But his revelations did describe, in all their dimension, an action contrary to the law, often involving crimes, torture, use of prohibited weapons and use of lies to “justify” military actions, among others.

In fairness, Americans and the world must thank the brave journalist for at least warning us of the black cloak that the United States administration uses to hide its crimes.

Even, according to statements by Assange’s wife, Stella Moris, Mike Pompeo, the former director of the CIA and Secretary of State in the Donald Trump Administration, had instructed agents to explore the possibility of assassinating Assange inside the Embassy. from Ecuador to the United Kingdom, where he was exiled.

It was no coincidence that when Washington learned how its actions were being unmasked on the international stage, it unleashed a true witch hunt against Julian Assange.

In these circumstances, a worthy man from a Latin American country, Rafael Correa, at that time president of Ecuador, welcomed him, in mid-2012, at the Embassy of the Andean nation in London, where, in addition to providing him with asylum, as established legal regulations, the process of granting him Ecuadorian citizenship was carried out – at the journalist’s own request.

Both actions, humane, supportive and in accordance with the law, seemed to indicate their permanent protection.

But a new president in Ecuador, Lenín Moreno who was vice president when Correa granted asylum and citizenship to the founder of Wikileaks, betrayed not only the Citizen Revolution Movement in which he was a member, but also the principles that founded the protection of Assange, and in 2019 he opened the doors of the diplomatic headquarters so that the London Police could arrest him and take him to a high-security prison, where he is still located.

With the real possibility of being extradited to the United States, the United Kingdom Court will reconsider, on May 20, Julian Assange’s permission to appeal against his extradition.

Regarding the case, the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, has said that “Julian Assange dared to bring to light revelations of alleged war crimes committed by the United States. It is unacceptable that years of his life have been stolen. “He remains arbitrarily detained in the United Kingdom on politically motivated charges brought by the United States for revealing his alleged wrongdoing.”
