Italy will open the polls for the European Parliament election

Italian voters must choose, among 788 candidates, the 76 politicians from this country who will take their seats in the European Parliament.

Those 76 MEPs out of a total of 720 will then influence, based on alliances with parties from other European countries, the political line of the Parliament, one of the two legislative bodies of the European Union, and the composition of the next European Commission, that is that is, the executive body of the regional community.

However, the probable abstentionism shakes the parties and, according to observers, it is likely that less than half of those with the right to vote will participate in these elections.

In fact, in the last European elections, in 2019, only 54.5 percent of Italian voters participated and various surveys suggest that only between 48 and 53 percent of those who can attend this weekend’s elections. exercise that right.

Lorenzo Pregliasco, an expert from the polling company Youtrend, pointed out in statements published this Saturday on the website of the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that “the aging of the population physiologically leads to increasingly lower electoral participation.”

All citizens who have turned 18 before June 9, 2024 can participate and analysts consider that “those who are going to vote for the first time are very likely to go to the polls, while the group between 25 and 34 years old “It generally remains below average.”

For the European elections, the Italian territory is divided into five constituencies, each of which groups together some regions and the electoral law provides for a purely proportional system, which guarantees the maximum possible equivalence between the votes obtained and the seats that will be assigned to the parties in the European Parliament.

The main participating Italian political forces are Brothers of Italy (FdI), the Democratic Party (PD), the 5 Star Movement, Forza Italia, The League, the United States of Europe, the Alliance of the Greens and the Left, as well as the Movement Action.

The Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is presented as a candidate for the FdI party, who, however, if she triumphs, will surely resign from her position to remain at the head of the Government.

Likewise, for the opposition PD, its leader, Elly Schlein, currently also an Italian deputy, heads the list of candidates, who if elected would not abandon her current position to become an MEP.
