Biden’s new immigration policy does affect obtaining appointments at CBP One

President Joe Biden’s recent executive order, aimed at addressing the immigration crisis, has also generated repercussions on the process of obtaining appointments through the CBP One application at the southern border of the United States.

True, the measure does not directly impact applicants who follow the legal procedure. But the avalanche of cases and the saturation of the system have made access to appointments difficult.

According to journalist Alexis Boentes of Telemundo, the executive order, designed to close the southern border and restrict access to asylum, has generated an increase in appointment processing times.

While Biden’s policy does not directly affect those waiting for an appointment, it has created a spillover effect that makes the process more difficult.

Goodbye to credible fear

Previously, migrants crossing the border illegally had access to a credible fear interview if they expressed fear of returning to Mexico or their country of origin. However, with the new policy, this option has been eliminated, which could result in a greater number of automatic deportations.

The cooperation of third countries, such as Mexico, is crucial for the implementation of this policy. However, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has expressed his discontent with receiving people who are not Mexican nationals. He has urged that irregular migrants be deported directly to their countries of origin.

CBP One app

The CBP One app, used to schedule appointments, has experienced frequent technical issues. They include weak signals and failures in photo scanning, which has made the process even more difficult. With only 1,450 appointments available per day and an average of more than 4,200 migrant crossings across the southern border in April, competition for an appointment has become even fiercer.

Biden’s immigration policy reflects an attempt to address the migration crisis, but has created additional difficulties for asylum seekers. The issue of immigration has become a critical issue in American politics, and the government’s actions are being closely watched in this context.
