Maduro and other candidates sign agreement for the elections – DW – 06/20/2024

Eight of the ten candidates for the presidential elections on July 28 in Venezuela, including President Nicolás Maduro, signed this Thursday (06/20/2024) an agreement that obliges them to recognize the result that the National Electoral Council (CNE) announces after the counting of the votes, leaving no room for possible claims.

Furthermore, the document proposed by Chavismo and made official by the CNE contemplates express recognition of the work of the governing body during the electoral process, in compliance with the established schedule. Only the opponents Edmundo González Urrutia – who brings together the main anti-Chavista parties – and Enrique Márquez refused to participate in the agreement.

The head of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, close to Chavismo, read the agreement, signed by Maduro and seven candidates who define themselves as opponents, although the traditional leadership considers them “collaborators” of the regime. “Whatever the electoral referee, amen,” said Maduro after the signing. “Enough of sabotage against our country, enough of conspiracies. “Venezuela wants tranquility,” he added.

They were already in the Barbados agreement

Despite having said that he would not attend the event because “I do not have any invitation to go to the CNE today,” González’s name was on the document. “He did not respond to the call of the country,” Amoroso said after calling him without an answer. González denounced that this document was “unilaterally imposed” by the CNE, and highlighted that the recognition of the results was already part of the agreement signed last year between the government and the opposition in Barbados, with mediation by Norway.

Among these points are the recognition of the electoral result or the “guarantees” in the process. The signed document also commits to maintaining a “climate of respect, peace and democratic participation”, so that, on election day and the following days, “the will of the people of Venezuela is not interfered with or ignored with acts of violence and destabilization that threaten against the well-being of the country”.
