On April 23 of the current year, to celebrate World Book Day, the prominent teacher and writer from Loja, Luis Antonio Quizhpe, presented the text Exégesis de Memorias de Gris, el gato sin amo by Hernán Rodríguez Castelo, at the museum of culture of our city; event attended by a large audience of teachers, parents, students and people interested in books and reading.

In the aforementioned book, the author makes an interpretive approach to the children’s novel Memorias de Gris, el gato sin amo, published in 1987, when children’s literature was born in our country with precursors such as Darío Guevara Mayorga, Leonidas Proaño, Gustavo Alfredo Jácome , Alicia Yánez Cossío, Alfonso Barrera Valverde, Hernán Rodríguez Castelo, Edna Iturralde, Francisco Delgado Santos, Eliecer Cárdenas and so many more.

It turns out, then, that the author of the book we are referring to had the privilege of being a student of Maestro Rodríguez and his wife Piedad Cabrera Velásquez, at the Private Technical University of Loja, in the Master’s Degree in Children’s and Youth Literature. They had cultivated a cordial friendship with the author of the novel to such an extent that he had given her a digital library of Children’s and Young People’s Literature that he later turned into a book under the title Voices for Ensoñación. And above all he had confessed to her about his predilection for cats.

Motivated by his teacher’s attachment to cats, Professor Quizhpe saw an endless pool of themes that could be derived from the book, so he dedicated himself to approaching the topic from narratology, descriptive analysis and symbolic elements.

The author of Exegesis of Memories of Gris, the Masterless Cat by Hernán Rodríguez Castelo, sent a copy to the wife of his teacher Rodríguez, who was also his teacher. She poses, for this newspaper, with the book in her hands, with a beautiful cover made by the Loja painter María Dolores Coronel. (YO)
