How to claim Stellantis if you are affected by defective PureTech motors: these are the steps

Last week, when we were already thinking about the Easter holidays, Stellantis announced that it was launching an extension to the warranty on its engines PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 manufactured between 2012 and last June 2022.

In recent times it has been discovered that these engines have a design problem and that, in some cases, the timing belt can deteriorate and break prematurely, causing a very serious breakdown in the engine costing several thousand euros.

The problem is that these propellants have a oil dipped strap. It has been detected that in the affected engines (and especially in those that make short trips) the oil becomes contaminated by fuel remains and ends up unraveling the timing belt. These remains of the belt filter into the lubrication passages and end up saturating the oil filter. Without proper oil pressure, the engine breaks down.

Initially, Stellantis announced that the first and second generation PureTech engines (with the third, from June 2022, reinforced belts or timing chains were installed) were fully covered for the first five years of purchase or 100,000 kilometers. After this time, the warranty covered the cars for parts (not labor) between the first five and eight years or between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometers.

But the last big change was announced last week. Stellantis confirmed that it was retroactively extending the warranty to 10 years from the purchase of the car or 175,000 kilometers. This guarantee is applicable throughout Europe and will take into account both the cost of parts and labor.

How to claim the 10-year warranty on PureTech engines

The official announcement from Stellantis came last week and, as we say, they affect all cars that between 2012 and 2022 were produced with the PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines. Between the affected cars We find bestsellers such as the Peugeot 208 and 308, 2008 and 3008, Citroën C3 and C4, Citroën Berlingo or Opel Crossland X, among many others. You can check the complete list at this link.

With the extended warranty, the customer is covered for labor and the cost of parts for any problem that may have arisen with the vehicle. But, from the brand, they demand that the maintenance has been carried out on time.

This means that all inspections and component replacements must have been carried out when they were due. If our car has only been to official workshops, there is no problem because Stellantis will have a history with all the maintenance. If he maintenance has been carried out outside its facilities, it will be mandatory to prove everything with invoices.

In order to claim the warranty, it will be necessary to contact an official dealer, where the steps to follow will be explained to the customer. What is certain is that the possible change in the timing belt has to be carried out at the Stellantis facilities if it is proven that it is necessary to act in this way.

As for the repairs or replacements already paid forwe have contacted the brands of the Stellantis Group, who have confirmed to us that they are working to financially compensate those who have had to make a premature payment due to problems with their PureTech engines.

At the moment, they do not confirm to us what this compensation will consist of, possible amounts that will be applied or how this will be carried out, but they do assure that they hope to have a solution in the remainder of the month of April to provide a solution to those clients who have already had to disburse money ahead of time.

In either case, the brands refer us to the official dealerswith whom customers will have to contact and, thus, they will be informed of the measures taken to apply the extended warranty.
