Oscar de Jesús Colina, better known as Colina, was a renowned singer which had the support of the record company Sonographic, subsidiary of Radio Caracas Televisionwho led him to success as a singer-songwriter, getting his songs to be constantly heard on the country’s radio stations.

His style and catchy themes like “If you leave” and “Macarapaná”, They managed to penetrate among young people and contemporary adults, taking him to the heights of success and being part of a group of important singers who enjoyed fame in the 80s.

Colina talks about her addiction

In a recent interview published by the Venezuelan journalist, Luis Olavarrieta, The man from Caracas opens his heart to tell everything about his dark past. In that sense, they brought up everything what he lost because of drugs and how fame led him to enter that terrible territory.

“Becoming a celebrity, being famous, is not easy. I did a musical production in which we all consumed a lot of drugs (…) And I’m from the 80s,” expressed the singer.

Likewise, he talked about how difficult it was to obtain a position in the media due to his controversial physical appearance. “I wasn’t anticipating anything, I simply wanted to do what I wanted to do. Do you know what it’s like to arrive on a television channel with painted lips? It wasn’t easy at all,” said.

“Maybe if I didn’t go through the experience I went through, I would have died (…) I played that game in an uncomfortable way. I’m not calling for people to take drugs to be a musician, to be an artist, but it is a reality”, he added.

Imprisonment

His career was tarnished by being accused and captured in 1989 for drug possession and trafficking, and although he denied having participated, he spent more than ten years in prison. At that time, Colina was involved in the case with Colombians María Elena Salcedo and Carlos Herrera Castro.

Upon leaving, he continued composing, but without the impact he had caused before being locked up, but a decade later he managed to resurface and reappear on stage. At that time he was a victim of the famous “social media deaths,” since it was speculated exactly 53 times that he had died.

In 2015, the Cendis (National Disc Center) edited “Through time”, a small compilation of songs recorded at the beginning of his career along with four new songs.
