Charly García played in public after two years: how the long-awaited return at Faena was created

After two years, Charlie Garcia He played in public again. It was at the Faena, in a luxurious hotel in Puerto Madero, in Buenos Aires, and the musician performed two of his classics, “Going from the bed to the living room” and “Close to the revolution”Next to the Baremberg & Mojo Jam Bandthe band led by drummer Gaston Baremberg and the bassist Juan Martin Mojoli (“Mojo”of The Kuelgue). “There is nothing more beautiful than seeing García happy and connected to music,” says Baremberg, still excited by the experience.

The story of this return begins in February. Gaston Barembergdrummer of the band Fito Paez For more than three decades, he took advantage of the break they were going to have with the band from Rosario (currently in Madrid, recording Novel, his new album) to put together a project with a playful spirit. “We met for coffee with Laura Suhs in charge of artistic and creative director of Faena to see what we could put together. Since I had no show with Fito for a couple of months, I suggested putting together a band to have fun, but above all with the spirit of García, so that Charly’s music would return to Faena, with the fantasy that one day what happened might happen. last night,” explains the drummer.

Last week, finally, the longing began to activate. “Laura, she wrote to me to tell me that Facu Iñigo [el hermano de Mecha, la pareja de Charly], I was going as a DJ and Charly wanted to go,” explains Baremberg. “I went crazy! But he also understood that there was not much certainty that that would ultimately happen.”

Yesterday afternoon, the drummer received the confirmation and soon communicated it to the rest of the band, which includes the guitarist Julia Agra already Luna Suarez on piano and voice. “The Master is coming,” he told them.

The surprise was great, because when Charly arrived at Faena, the band had not tested sound. In fact, the place was full of people. “So we just sat down to play a repertoire with songs from Stevie wonder, Prince and James Brown” says Baremberg. “I turned to my left, back, to where Charly García was, and I saw him Tattoo Vega [mano derecha de Charly, histórico aliado SNM], who looked at me smiling, as if to say ‘Hey, Charly is applauding, he likes it, he’s cool!’. So we accelerated the list of songs and at a moment when I saw that everything was cooking, that Charly wanted to play, I looked at Julia and told her to start with the song García. “People went crazy and they automatically moved Charly’s chair closer to the piano.”

The audience that filled the room was, for the most part, Argentine. “”Inexplicably, despite it being a Wednesday night, the place was full of people and when García entered, because of that magnet, that antenna he has, it makes people go crazy, it makes everyone have an involuntary smile and they start singing loudly songs that not even they knew they knew.”

It was not the first time that Baremberg played with Charly: “We played with Fito several times, I think the first time was in 2009 or 2010. Then, in 2013, we did the García Páez tour, which we played first, then Charly played, and The two bands ended up on stage. There were very few shows, but it was crazy. “Just like the tribute to Spinetta at the 2013 Gardel awards.”
However, the experience for the drummer is always moving: “I haven’t had that chance in a long time and it still happens to me the same as always, I feel the emotion on the surface like the first time. I still tell you and I can’t believe it”, he gets excited.

Baremberg does not fall from happiness: “I think the most important thing about what happened yesterday, beyond the world being a better place because Charly García exists and because he still plays the piano, was that he was happy. He was happy. He wanted to play despite everything and thanks to everyone. And at one point he turns around and the only thing he said, because it was what mattered most to him, was: ‘More volume! I tell you the truth, there is nothing more beautiful than seeing Garcia happy and connected to music!”
