The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, participated today in the meeting that the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, held with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerína Sakellaropoúlou, together with the respective delegations, within the framework of their official visit to our country.

This is the first that a Hellenic head of state has carried out in our country.

The meeting of the leaders allowed them to address various issues of common interest, both bilateral and multilateral aspects.

President Gabriel Boric highlighted the similar realities that both nations share in ocean matters. In this framework, the president requested Greece’s support for Chile’s proposal as headquarters for the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity beyond National Jurisdictions (BBNJ).

Furthermore, both leaders stressed that both Chile and Greece share support for multilateralism, respect for international law and international treaties, as well as the principles of democracy as a form of government and guarantee respect for human rights, which will continue. promoting in the various forums. Likewise, they delved into the Advanced Framework Agreement, which requires the individual support of the 27 Member States of the European Union and the collective support of the EU institutions.

On the occasion, Minister van Klaveren, together with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Georgios Kotsiras, signed the “Agreement Allowing Paid Work for Spouses of Diplomatic and Consular Personnel.”

In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation was signed.
