SGC warns of increase in seismic events at the Puracé volcano in Cauca

He Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported this Tuesday on an increase in the frequency of seismic events in the Puracé volcano,
located in the department of Cauca. According to a statement from the SGC, in the last 16 hours there has been an increase in seismic events related to rock fracturing and fluid movement within the volcano.

During the last 16 hours there has been an increase in the recurrence of seismic events associated with rock fracturing and the movement of fluids inside the volcano. These earthquakes, although they are low energy, have been located beneath the Puracé volcano building at depths of between 0 and 5 kilometers.

the SGC detailed in a statement.

The organization noted that the volcano has shown changes in its activity during recent months, but currently the alert level is still yellow. This level indicates that the volcano is active and presents changes in behavior with respect to its base level of monitored parameters and other manifestations. The SGC explained that in a yellow alert state, a slight or moderate increase in volcanic activity above the base level is possible.

Although this type of activity is considered common by the SGC, It is not ruled out that the volcano could intensify its activity, which could lead to a change in the alert status.

“In a yellow alert state, the volcano may present a slight or moderate increase in activity above the base level of behavior.”or, according to the monitored parameters,” added the SGC.

The Puracé volcano, located 27 kilometers from Popayán, the capital of the department of Cauca, mainly influences indigenous and peasant communities in the region. In addition, it is part of the 15 volcanoes that make up the Los Coconucos Volcanic Chain and is known for being a stratovolcano —a high-altitude conical volcano formed by multiple layers of lava—and one of the most active in the country.
