They cut tariffs on imports of refrigerators, washing machines and tires

“The government has decided to carry out a reduction in certain import tariffs,” Adorni explained. The spokesperson explained that for refrigerators and washing machines, the tariff will drop “from 35% to 20%”which is a way to return to the level shared by the Mercosur member countries.

Regarding tires, Adorni indicated that the tariff will be reduced “from 35% to 16%”which “will represent a relief for freight and people transportation companies.”

Adorni also announced a reduction in tariffs for main plastic inputs, going “from 12.6% to 6%”. According to the spokesperson, this will mean “less cost” and a “favorable impact for consumers who demand various goods manufactured with plastic inputs”, ranging from “food packaging and personal hygiene products to household appliances and toys”.

“This implies better prices and a higher level of competition in the market that will benefit us all,” concluded the official statement on these tariff measures.

The reduction of these import tariffs seeks to lower consumer prices in sensitive items such as white goods and transportation, as well as promoting competition in the internal market. It remains to be seen the concrete impact that these measures will have on citizens’ pockets in the coming months, and also in the production of refrigerators and tires that are developed in Argentina.

In line with these announcements, the government of Javier Milei last March it opened imports for basic basket products after a meeting with supermarkets. It was even reported that tax discounts will be applied to some to give them competitiveness. With this measure, according to the ruling party, what is sought is to correct prices that increased too much due to inflation expectations in the sector that were not met.

Among the main products affected by the official measure are bpineapples, potatoes, pork, coffee, tuna, cocoa products, insecticides, shampoos and diapers.
