New Delhi: Even though the heatwave intensity reduced in Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand on Saturday (May 4), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the searing temperature will continue until May 5-6. The weather department said that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions prevailed in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Telangana, and the maximum temperature was recorded around 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal in these places.

The IMD has predicted that several places in southern Bengal will be hit by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds from May 5, and in the next 4-5 days, the maximum temperature is expected to come down. It also alerted the fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal between May 6 and May 7.

A wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is expected from May 5-9 in East India. The maximum intensity is expected to be on May 6-7. In South Peninsular India, a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is predicted during the same period.

Rainfall from May 5 to 9 in these places: East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh is likely to witness scattered light to moderate rainfall from May 5 to 9. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Karnataka may also see scattered light to moderate rainfall from May 6 to May 9. The IMD forecast also says heavy to very heavy rainfall spell accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely over Northeast India by Sunday.

Warmest cities: Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal recorded 46 degrees Celsius on Saturday and remained the hottest city across the country for the third consecutive day. The maximum temperatures were recorded at 45.9 degrees Celsius in Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), 45 degrees in Mahbubnagar (Telangana), 44 degrees in Odisha’s Boudh, 43.5 degrees in Karur Paramathi (Tamil Nadu), 44.6 degrees in Nizamabad (Telangana), 45.4 in Andhra Pradesh’s Cuddapah, and 43.5 degrees in West Bengal’s Kalaikunda. The IMD said that heatwave conditions are likely to continue in some parts of Rajasthan as maximum temperature could go up by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
