The timely evacuation of the Zarcitos village prevented the torrential flood that occurred over the Honda River from becoming a tragedy of the winter season in Antioquia. Although the emergency left at least 30 homes destroyed, there were only three people injured, who are out of danger.

Residents of the area point out that it all started with a landslide that occurred in the early morning of May 4. The avalanche blocked two homes, so relief units were present in the area very early to assist the inhabitants of the affected homes.

In the middle of the rescue, they realized that the water level of the stream dropped drastically, so shouting and whistling, they asked the inhabitants of the village to go to the top of a nearby mountain from where they heard and saw as the flood took away most of the homes.

“Everyone alerted that an avalanche was coming higher up, everyone was raising their skirts, everyone went out with what they could, they were able to save eight barely fledged chicks, some piglets, some clothes, but nothing more. From up there they saw how everything was destroyed, they were very devastated,” Ariel Ramírez told El Colombiano, who added that the majority of those who live in the area are part of the same family.

“We initially deployed a search and rescue operation and we arrived at the area and found the affected community,” said Juan Carlos Posada, operational coordinator of the Civil Defense of Antioquia. After that, the evacuation of the people in the village was carried out. and in the surrounding area of ​​La Honda, as well as ordered the preventive departure of at least 60 people from the urban area of ​​the municipality.

According to the authorities, around 30 homes were affected, most of them were destroyed by water; more than 100 injured people, who remain in the municipality’s coliseum, and three injured, of which two are in local care centers and one in Medellín.

On the morning of this Sunday, May 5, several of the victims returned to the path, which is full of mud, to try to recover as much as possible, including the animals that they could not evacuate at the time of the emergency, while waiting for the authorities to carry out the corresponding studies in the area, which could have become an uninhabitable area.

After the emergency, the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, traveled to the area from where he indicated that: “we are in contact with all the Mayors where emergencies have occurred as a result of the rainy season.”

For its part, the mayor of Montebello set up a place to collect aid, at the Vive Digital point of the municipality, where they are receiving blankets, non-perishable food, clothing for children and adults, in good condition, to support the affected people.
