Consolidating its regional relevance in environmental matters, the Municipality of Córdoba will be the host city of the III Regional Dialogue of the Network of Sustainable Cities and Mayors for Democracy.

The event will take place on May 8, 9 and 10 and will bring together leaders and chiefs of staff from 20 cities in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.

The meeting will address the different contemporary challenges in the region and will promote the exchange of knowledge and Latin American urban experiences. It will focus on topics such as Sustainable Urban Development and the 2030 Agenda, Green Growth and Adaptation to Climate Change.

It is organized by the Regional Energy Security and Climate Change Program in Latin America (EKLA) of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) and the Regional Center for Green Growth and Climate Change, with the support of the Municipality of Córdoba.

The opening ceremony will be next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Museum of Urban Art in Plaza España.

It will be headed by Mayor Daniel Passerini; and the representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Argentina, Susanne Käss, will participate; the Executive Director of the Regional Center for Green Growth and Climate Change of Chile, Cristian Gutiérrez; the Director of the Regional Energy Security and Climate Change Program in Latin America (EKLA) of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS), Julia Sandner; and the governor of the Province of Córdoba, Martín Llaryora.

Passerini and the Secretary of Sustainable Environment and Circular Economy, Jorge Folloni, will present the city’s Climate Action Plan.

Local experiences

During Thursday and Friday, participants will learn about some milestones of the municipality’s public policies on the matter. They will visit the Botanical Garden, the School of Circular Economy, the Biodiversity Park, the Free University of the Environment and the Institute of Environmental and Animal Protection. They will also visit the Las Heras-Elisa Park, Plaza Colón, the Costanera and the Chateau Park.

At the same time, an innovation workshop for climate solutions will be held in which representatives from the cities of Córdoba, Villa María and Salta will work.

The dialogue and exchange of local Latin American experiences will focus on Friday in the following thematic tables: Citizen Participation in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda; Water Management at the Municipal Level, SDG 6 Clean Water and Sanitation; Municipal Circular Economy; Solutions Based on Nature and Biodiversity at the Urban Level.

Some other cities that will present their perspectives will be Peñalolen, Punta Arenas and Coyhaique (Chile); Mérida and Puebla (Mexico); El Carmen (Ecuador); Ollantaytambo and Machupicchu (Peru); Dota and Belén (Costa Rica); Herveo (Colombia).

The event will conclude on Friday with the signing of a joint declaration and the presentation of the 2024 programs, in addition to future action guidelines.

Democracy and regional collaboration

The III Regional Dialogue of the Network of Sustainable Cities and Mayors for Democracy is promoted by the Regional Energy Security and Climate Change Program in Latin America (EKLA).

The initiative provides traditional and digital platforms to develop multilateral dialogue and collaboration towards regional integration on climate change, energy and environmental policies.

This approach is also promoted by the Regional Center for Green Growth and Climate Change, which seeks to strengthen political and environmental dialogue between the mayors of Latin America. To do this, it implements spaces for the exchange of experiences, training and dissemination of actions within the framework of democratic values ​​and green growth.
