House of Representatives approves positive presentation of the bill that seeks to prohibit bullfighting

“Today is a historic day in the Congress of the Republic because it is the first time that not only does a bill that prohibits bullfighting reach the fourth debate, but we also managed to overcome different obstacles in this plenary session by rejecting archival proposals. (….) “We managed to approve the presentation report to begin this debate, we are halfway through and we still have to continue tomorrow with the discussion that had been suspended and we still need to discuss the articles and the title and question,” said representative Alejandro García of the Green Alliance, rapporteur of this bill.

And he added inviting Colombian citizens to demand that congressmen give their positive vote so that Colombia turns the page on this practice and thus leaves the list of the only eight countries in the world where bullfighting is legal.

This Tuesday’s vote

The proposals to shelve the project were denied with 82 votes for No and 71 votes for Yes.

After the project was denied filing, the proposals without endorsement of the articles of the initiative were put to the representatives’ consideration, but the session was adjourned due to lack of quorum and was scheduled for this Wednesday, May 8 at 1:00 in the afternoon.

The current text being discussed in Congress is authored by Petrista senator Esmeralda Hernández and aims to end bullfighting nationwide by planning a job reconversion plan for families that demonstrate that their livelihood depends on these practices. . This means that it does not affect other practices with animals such as corralejas or cockfighting.

“It will not be prohibited from one day to the next, we will have a transition process to identify bullfighting workers.” and develop a reconversion process with their participation. If you look at the bullrings today, most of them are abandoned because people did not want to go back to bullfighting. They did not continue doing them, the tradition was lost and, therefore, they cannot resume them,” the senator from the Historical Pact recently told the magazine WEEK.
