CRT Biobío promotes the first quality and safety standard in Telehealth in Chile

The Regional Center for Telemedicine and Telehealth of Biobío (CRT Biobío), dependent on the University of Concepción and financed by Regional government, is promoting the standardization process for Chile of the international standard ISO 13131. This standard offers guidelines for planning quality and safety in Telehealth services, executed through the National Institute of Standardization (INN). The document entered the Public Consultation stage this Tuesday.

The Director of CRT Biobío and academic UdeC Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Angélica Avendaño, He announced that “we contracted the National Institute of Standardization (INN) to manage the normalization of this standard. The expected result will represent a significant reference input for the advancement of the quality of Telehealth in the country, and in the future it will be possible to see the possibility that health care organizations in Chile can be certified with respect to this standard if they wish. “We are pleased that the draft is now available for review and community participation.”

The standardization process includes, among other aspects, the translation of the ISO 13131 standard into Spanish and its adaptation to the particular context of Chile, a process carried out together with the INN and the Preliminary Technical Committee, which has been formed for this purpose. . Among the members of the Committee, there are representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Superintendency of Health, the University Network of Telemedicine (RUTE-CHILE), the National Center for Health Information Systems (CENS), the Digital Health Network of the State Universities and the Chilean Medical Devices Association (ADIMECH).

The Coordinator of the R&D&i&e Axis of CRT Biobío, Maurizio Mattoli, the team that promoted this initiative, commented: “The importance of this standard is that it offers guidelines and directives to manage risk and plan quality in Telehealth with a “Broad view, covering the main dimensions and characteristics to be considered in the design, planning and execution of health services in Telehealth.”

This Tuesday the Public Consultation phase of the draft project began. The document will be available for 30 days at www.consultapublica.cl and open to comments and feedback from the community. They will then be submitted to the review of the Technical Committee. At the end of this process, it is expected to generate the corresponding Chilean Standard 3858.
