As the hours progress, fear and anguish take over the inhabitants of Caimital, a village in the rural area of ​​the municipality of Malambo, metropolitan area of ​​Barranquilla, which is threatened with being flooded by the Magdalena River.

The concern of local authorities, relief organizations and the community is that a flood of the magnitude that is occurring in Caimital will occur in Caimital. the region of La Mojana, between the departments of Sucre, Córdoba and Bolívar, as a consequence of the rupture of the Cara de Gato gap due to the pressure of the waters of the Cauca River.

Fear of a catastrophe

Faced with this emergency, the president proposed the creation of a technical table to evaluate the risks and determine the actions to follow.

The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 23 and will feature the participation of Cormagdalena, the Atlantic Regional Autonomous Corporation (CRA), Malambo business groups, the Fire Department, the Civil Defense and the Vergara and Velasco Battalion of Malambo.

“It is essential to review and monitor the technical measures necessary to prevent a catastrophe,” said Verano, underlining the need for an immediate and coordinated response.

Yenis Orozco, mayor of Malambo, He highlighted the urgency of national support to address the critical situation in Caimital.

“We invite the National Risk Management Unit (Ungrd) to support us in finding a quick solution. We are going to join forces with the Atlantic Government to protect our inhabitants,” said Orozco.

There are four kilometers at risk

Nelson Oquendo, undersecretary of Disaster Prevention and Attention of the department, explained that the problem affects four kilometers of riverbank, of which 700 meters are severely eroded. The next technical table will address these situations with the participation of infrastructure, disaster prevention technicians and representatives of Cormagdalena, CRA and the Pinza Industrial Park.

The undermining has caused the collapse of homes, affecting numerous peasant families, according to Augusto Rivero, municipal government secretary.

This Tuesday, the Malambo Mayor’s Office installed a Unified Command Post (PMU) in Caimital to coordinate the response to the emergency.

Mayor Orozco requested continued support from the National Government and thanked the Vergara and Velasco Battalion, the Fire Department, the National Police and the Civil Defense for their collaboration. She also called on the mayors of Soledad and Sabanagrande to join in this fight.

Eduard Torres, Municipal Risk Management liaison, indicated that the erosion affects about 300 people, with 33 families in Caimital and 64 in El Espinal. Furthermore, sectors such as Mesolandia, El Pasito, El Morrito and Marquetalia are also at risk of flooding.

Armando Rodríguez, director of the Civil Defense – Atlantic Section, He asked the community to comply with the recommendations of the relief agencies. “We will begin all possible mitigation works,” said Rodríguez.
