A body in an advanced state of decomposition was found in a wooded area known as “Los Tanques Rojos”, located between the Versalles and Altamira neighborhoods, in Santiago de Cuba.

The deceased responded to the name of Heriberto Sánchez Reyes, 54 years old, who lived on Trinidad Street, reported journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

The reporter’s sources said that the area is guarded by the Police and that the body was found half-buried.

Apparently, Sánchez Reyes picked up an engine from someone else the previous Saturday morning.

“They say that after being picked up, the engine was flat and Herilberto took it to the punch bowl on Rastro Street, between Martí and Yarayó. After 1 in the afternoon on Saturday he went out for a walk and they lost track of him until yesterday, when this body was found very far from his residence,” the journalist explained.

To date, the whereabouts of the engine are unknown and it is presumed that the victim was murdered by thieves.

The east of the country is one of the areas most affected by the wave of violence that Cuba has been experiencing for years. The difficult living conditions have thrown Cubans into criminal paths such as robbery and murder.

At the end of April, a young man named Kevin Luis Griñán Reyna was murdered in Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín, where he lived, and his body appeared in a river-landfill in the municipality.

Griñán Reyna received four fatal stab wounds.

Also that month, Leonel Batista Pinillo, driver of an electric tricycle in Holguín, was murdered. The man was stabbed seven times and was found by another tricycle driver.
