Buenos Aires, June 5 (EFECOM).- Argentina produced a total of 38,440 automobiles last May, 27.9% less than in the same month of 2023, according to sectoral data released this Wednesday.

According to a report from the Association of Automotive Factories (Adefa), vehicle production fell 10.6% compared to last April.

In the first five months of the year, production totaled 184,707 units, 23.8% less compared to the same period in 2023.

Regarding exports, in May there was a shipment of 22,974 vehicles, which represents an increase of 11.5% compared to last April, but a drop of 24.1% in interannual terms.

In the accumulated January-May period, Argentine terminals recorded the export of 105,955 units, 17.7% less than the shipments registered in the same period last year.

The automotive sector, one of the main industrial activities in Argentina, is facing a significant contraction in demand, in a context of generalized decline in economic activity, high inflation and loss of purchasing power of families, a combination of factors that are hitting consumption.

Furthermore, in recent weeks there have been sporadic stoppages at several production plants in Argentina due to a lack of supply of parts from component factories in southern Brazil, which have been affected by flooding in that area.

“The lack of supply of parts is reflected in the production volumes of the period and its comparison with the previous month,” explained Martín Zuppi, president of Adefa.

However, the sector highlighted that for the first time so far this year, an increase in export volumes and wholesale sales to the domestic market has been observed in May compared to the previous month.

“In this sense, and although it will require monitoring in the coming months, we observe that we could be in the presence of a change in trend, after having found a floor in these variables in the month of April,” commented Zuppi. EFECOM
