Foot and mouth disease: Río Negro rejects modifications to the health barrier – News

The Province of Río Negro reported that it is firmly opposed to any change in the health barrier that protects the region from foot and mouth disease.

The National Government’s proposal to unblock said barrier, in an attempt to promote free trade, has been rejected by the Rio Negro authorities.

Carlos Banacloy, Minister of Productive Development of Río Negro, expressed concern about the possible negative consequences that such a measure could have for the health status of Patagonia. “The truth is that we are very concerned about this possibility, it is a very important setback knowing that we would quickly lose a lot of markets,” he declared.

The minister emphasized the value of Patagonia’s positioning as a differential zone free of foot-and-mouth disease and warned about the risks that abandoning this status would entail. According to him, such a decision would go against the global path towards ever higher health standards.

“It is the proposal that I believe we have to bring to the National Government: understand that it has to unify a sanitary status but superior, surpassing, not a setback,” Banacloy concluded.

The Province continues working to maintain and improve its current health status.
