A delegation from the Indian government made an official visit to Colombia with the aim of strengthening commercial ties to import Colombian emeralds and exchange knowledge in the jewelry industry.

At the moment, Colombia produces an average of two million carats of emeralds annually, which are especially marketed with countries such as the United States, China and Switzerland.

This initiative was led by the Indian Embassy in Colombia, the GJEPC (Gem & Jewelery Export Promotion Council) and the Department of Commerce and Industry of India.

During its stay in Colombia, the Indian delegation held various meetings with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the National Mining Agency, Procolombia, merchants, sector associations and scientists from CDTEC Gemlab, the most important public emerald laboratory in the country.

The conversations revolved around the creation of new business opportunities, facilitating trade in cut and rough emeralds, and the promotion of technical and educational cooperation in the field of jewelry from India to Colombia.

The colombian emeralds, which are known worldwide for their incomparable quality and the vibrant green color they have, are of great interest to the Indian market.

In Indian culture, the green color of emerald has deep spiritual and cultural meaning. Thus, Colombian emeralds are in considerable demand in India, where they are appreciated both for their beauty and their symbolic meaning.

Colombian emeralds are not only a symbol of luxury and beauty, but also of a rich cultural heritage that we want to share and appreciate in India. This visit marks the beginning of a closer relationship between our countries in terms of trade and culture,” said the Indian ambassador to Colombia, Shri Vanlalhuma.

For his part, the president of Acodes, Guillermo Galvis, highlighted that the purpose of this alliance is not only to seek increase emerald exports, but also “learn from the historical Indian experience in jewelry manufacturing and its integration into global markets, thus having the opportunity to transform the emerald from a raw material to works of art and jewelry of the best quality, opening new opportunities for emerald makers and Colombian merchants”.

It is expected that in the coming months they will be signed specific agreements that facilitate trade and technical cooperation, thus benefiting both nations.
