40 years ago a small group of people gathered in the center of Bogotá with banners, bouquets of flowers and various speeches prepared to demand respect for diverse sexuality. “There were more police than protesters,” recalls one of the organizers.

That march, considered the first LGBTIQ+ mobilization in Colombia, became the gateway for today, four decades later, gay, lesbian, trans, and bisexual people to continue demanding the guarantee of their rights through social organization.

One of the greatest achievements that people of diverse sexuality have had is the organization through groups, foundations or corporations. to obtain advice and defend their constantly violated rights.

Regarding the commemoration of LGBTIQ+ month that takes place in June, El Espectador looked for 10 organizations in various departments of the country that can guide you or help you defend your rights.

He has been working for two decades to protect the rights of people of diverse sexuality. Although their headquarters are in Bogotá, they have an impact on the rest of the country. In addition to providing advice, it provides legal support to anyone who has a legal problem. It also trains on human rights and investigates about the armed conflict and the violations it had on the LGBTIQ+ population.

  • Affirmative Caribbean (Atlántico, Bolívar, Magdalena, Córdoba)

Led by Wilson Castañeda, a member of the Truth Commission, they have dedicated themselves to conducting investigations into the violations that the sexually diverse population suffers daily in Colombia, both in the armed conflict and in everyday contexts. They prepare reports and build databases to show the systematic nature of violence due to prejudice against this population and, in addition, they organize events on justice and human rights.

The organization is named after León Zuleta, one of the first people to demand the protection and guarantee of the rights of the sexually diverse population in the country in the 1970s. “Our interest is to participate and work together with other groups that support our cause for equality that implies sexual liberation, rethinking the conceptions of sexuality, personal relationships, gender roles and advocate for the change of the bonds that men and women establish, through new, more fair, equitable and democratic,” they say.
