Given the acute food shortage that hits people in Cuba, it is easy to imagine the difficulties they face. those who are dedicated to caring for animals. It is the case of two elderly people who run a dog shelter in Sancti Spíritus and no longer have anything to feed themaccording to a Facebook post by the NGO ARCA Foundationfrom the central Cuban province.

According to the NGO’s post, Esperanza and Guillén, the two elderly adults who care for more than 20 dogs in their shelter, ran out of food for the animals. This June 14, it had been 15 days since the State had sold them the quota assigned for the dogs and they no longer had “where to get” to feed them.

For those who want to help “monetarily or with food”, the ARCA Foundation left the address of the shelter (Gilberto Zequeira # 110), the telephone number (+53 5 8663908) and the bank card number (9224069991842762).

In the comments to the foundation’s post, several people stated that they had contributed money or were in a position to do so soon.

It is not the first time that Cuban protectors run out of food for the animals they care for. In June 2023, Yeraldine Fleitas Valdés also took to social media to launch a desperate plea for help to get food for her cats and dogs.

The lack of food for animals also reaches zoos, where the specimens exhibit a dire appearance. In May, a monkey named Pánfilo escaped from the Caibarién zoo in Villa Clara for the fifth time due to hunger.

“Disorder in the Caibarién zoo. For months the monkeys have been loose and entering houses and stealing food; houses in which there are children who at any moment a monkey could bite them and even something worse could happen, and the Government of Caibarién does nothing, not even Communales,” denounced Joel López Navarro, a resident of the municipality in the Facebook group “Somos de Caibarién”, where users warn that the monkeys become more aggressive to the extent that they do not get food.

In July 2023, a report from DIARIO DE CUBA about the 26 Zooin Havana, showed an enclosure full of starving animals.

Publications on social networks denounced Similar panoramas in other facilities of this type, such as the zoos of Camagüey and Bayamo, and the mini zoo of Cumanayagua, in Cienfuegos.

Cuban animal activists have denounced on more than one occasion the terrible conditions in which animals live in the island’s zoos and aquariums.administered by the State, directly responsible for the suffering of the species that inhabit them.

In 2022, the demands reached the point of demanding the closure of facilities, after learning of cases such as the death of a sea lion in the National Aquarium of Cubawho activists had already denounced, was malnourished.
