A delegation made up of 72 teachers from the 14 municipalities and the District of Riohacha, representing La Guajira, participate this Monday in the ‘Great Taking of Bogotá’ convened by Fecode and attended by teachers from all over the country.

Colombian educators consider that the efforts made for more than 32 years by the pedagogical movement and Fecode have been set back by the amendment to the statutory reform of education that is being processed in the Congress of the Republic, ensuring that this threatens public education. and financed by the State:

  1. There is no guarantee of funding for public education.
  2. Setback in efforts for public education to be administered directly by the State.
  3. Creation of scalar bonuses or vouchers.
  4. Reduction of education to an essential service means that there will be no right to strike or mobilization, nor any protest activity.
  5. Lack of knowledge of three-grade preschool.
  6. Ignorance of academic freedom and institutional autonomy.
  7. It subordinates the teaching evaluation to the results of external tests (Saber Tests).

Domingo Ayala, president of Fecode, called for this massive demonstration. In a call through the official account of the federation in X, he urged teachers to continue with the permanent national strike in defense of public education and the teaching profession. The strike has nearly 10 million students across the country without classes.

“Citizens and teachers need to continue with the efforts that have been established in all the assemblies that have taken place throughout the week and throughout the weekend, and the arrival in Bogotá today, Monday, June 17, on all four sides of the entrance to the capital of the country, where the participation is sure to be massive. Today we do not have the opportunity even to rest, we need to convince ourselves that the struggle is the only banner we need to defeat that amendment, which was proposed by the extreme right and that today we need it to be defeated in the Congress of the Republic,” he declared. Ayala Espitia.

Fecode argues that some of the proposals included in the bill are regressive and undermine the recognition of education as a fundamental right.

Among the criticisms, the union highlights that the “law incorporates a mixed approach to education, enabling its privatization and commercialization, which reflects the interest in imposing symbiosis between the public resource and the private sector.”

Furthermore, the project “restricts access to higher education for the large populations with the most difficulties, by imposing meritocracy as a criterion.”
