The department ranked 16th out of 32, according to the Private Competitiveness Council. It has fallen 0.3 points in basic and secondary education, and sophistication and diversification.

The Private Competitiveness Council (CPC) and the Universidad del Rosario have presented for the eleventh consecutive time the results of the Departmental Competitiveness Index (IDC) for the 32 departments of Colombia and the city of Bogotá. On this occasion, the Magdalena department is in position 16 with a score of 4.98 out of 10.

This version of the IDC includes some methodological modifications, such as the adjustment in the standardization method. This adjustment takes into account the historical maximum and minimum values ​​observed in the variables over a period of six years to calculate the scores. This facilitates the comparison of results between departments and the analysis of the evolution of their competitiveness over time.

One of the most notable results is the progress in the competitiveness of most departments. Of the 33 territories evaluated, 32 showed an increase in their score overall compared to the 2019 measurement. This is a positive sign regarding regional development and the reduction of competitive gaps.

The greatest advances were recorded in Caquetá, Guainía and the San Andrés Archipelago, with average annual increases of 4.7%, 4.6% and 3.5% respectively in the last six years.

However, some concerns were identified. Putumayo was the only department that reduced its overall score between 2019 and 2024, with an average annual drop of 0.8%. In addition, the gap between Bogotá (the best positioned) and Vichada (the worst) increased from 5.3 points in 2019 to 5.7 in 2024. This increase is due to the fact that Bogotá improved its score to a higher rate (1.3%) than Vichada (1.1%).

As for Magdalena, this department faces significant challenges in competitiveness, ranking 16th in the IDC with a score of 4.98 out of 10. Its best Results are observed in environmental sustainability and sophistication and diversification, with scores of 5.46 and 7.95 respectively.

In environmental sustainability, Magdalena stands out in indicators such as hectares of deforested forest (9.75) and CO2 emissions from mobile sources (9.26). In sophistication and diversification, obtains its best rating in the diversification of export destination markets (9.38).

However, Magdalena faces important opportunities for improvement in the financial system and innovation, with scores of 3.14 and 1.81 respectively. In the financial system, it presents challenges in insurance coverage and financial inclusion, with scores below 2.3 out of 10. In innovation, it occupies the last place nationally in patents and faces challenges in investment in ACTI, industrial designs and brands. .

In conclusion, Magdalena has shown its greatest progress in ICT and health adoption, improving 0.4 points compared to 2023. On the other hand, it has fallen 0.3 points in basic and secondary education, and sophistication and diversification.
