In a recent appearance In the program “Freedom of Opinion”, political scientist Gustavo Marangoni shared his analysis about the first six months of President Javier Milei’s administration. He addressed various topics, from initial challenges and economic policies to the government’s relationship with the provinces and the opposition’s prospects. The most important points of this interview are highlighted below.

Marangoni pointed out that the first months of Milei’s government have been a stage of “trial and error” in the relationship with the legislative power. “The administration began with a very ambitious project that included an Omnibus law of 663 articles, seeking to modify everything from fiscal aspects to the clothing of judges. However, this project was adjusted to a more modest but equally ambitious one, which has had half a sanction in the Senate and is pending treatment in the Chamber of Deputies,” the political scientist slipped.

On the other hand, he also highlighted the high turnover of officials in these six months: “There have been many changes. For six months, almost 50 officials who entered and left through a revolving door“, indicating a lack of stability in the government team.

In that same sense, Marangoni expressed concern about the prolonged recession facing Argentina. According to a report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), “this recession looks set to last longer than officials say. In addition, the IMF warned of social exhaustion due to the delay in economic recovery and stabilization policies. that affect the income of the population. This situation has generated discontent even among those who supported Milei in the elections,” he stated.

Regarding the relationship between the central government and the provinces, Marangoni highlighted the importance of an adequate delegation of functions. However, he warned that “one thing is for a president to delegate, the other is for a president to disengage.” The failed May Pact was another issue addressed, raising questions about the effectiveness of future similar calls and the government’s ability to coordinate efforts with the provinces.

Marangoni mentioned that the government has had to “lose a certain chastity” in its political negotiations to pass laws, adopting a more pragmatic and traditional approach. This change has been necessary to advance the management and administration of the country’s affairs. “Milei’s challenge is to consolidate her leadership in the non-Peronist space and articulate a proposal that includes the PRO and the radicals. The opposition, especially Unión por la Patria, faces its own challenges to consolidate itself ahead of the 2025 elections. The opposition needs more than a simple vocation to say “no” to be effective on the political stage,” she pointed out.
