Crashed on red alert for winter

A total of 26 municipalities in Chocó remain on red alert for the winter season, which has already left ten thousand families affected in this department.

This was announced by the National Risk Management Unit, which reported that in the coming days they will deliver humanitarian aid to 10,878 families in the municipality of Lloró, Alto, Medio and Bajo Baudó, which have been affected by the rains.

According to the entity, it was stated that in recent weeks, nearly 40 adverse events have been recorded in 17 Chocó municipalities, such as 25 floods, five structural fires, four mass movements, two gales, two forest fires and one maritime or river transport accident.

During the Departmental Risk Management Council, it was determined to extend the public calamity in this region for six more months.

The director of Risk Management, Carlos Carrillo, who attended the meeting, made an urgent call to the Chocó mayors to accurately and timely register the data of the affected people in the RUD Single Registry of Victims.

Carrillo stressed that “the responsibility of registering the victims lies with the municipality; If the information is not uploaded to the RUD Single Registry of Victims, we simply cannot do our work or provide humanitarian assistance.”

That is why he emphasized that “the responsibility of uploading this information is essential so that we can carry out our humanitarian work effectively.”

Likewise, he announced resources for two billion pesos from the FIC Collective Investment Fund to address emergencies in the department.

In addition, he explained that a crucial military bridge has been allocated to facilitate access and assistance in the most affected areas.

The official, together with the governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, inspected the retaining wall located on the San Juan River in the municipality of Istmina and announced its expansion.

The wall has an extension of 192 meters over the river, and its value exceeds 26 billion pesos, and is built with the purpose of protecting valuable infrastructure and residential areas of relevance in the city.

For her part, the governor of Chocó, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, has been warning about the situation in the department regarding the rains.

The departmental leader said that “the rainy season, even before the official start of the La Niña phenomenon, is already wreaking havoc on our department. We have river overflow in Nuquí and Istmina.”

The official added that “this rainy season can be truly disastrous for Chocó, and joint action at all levels of response is the only possible way to confront it with the dimensions that are anticipated.”
