Through a statement, the Santa Marta sub-directors of the Union of Workers of National Public Universities of Colombia, spoke out vehemently against some statements made in the final reports of the National Assembly, which took place on May 29 and 30.

According to what they reported, on June 4 of this year 2024, a statement called ‘Political Declaration of the XI Assembly of Delegates’ was issued, which, in its numbers five and six, states, respectively, that in universities such as the Magdalena, reforms to the rules have been carried out so that the rectors can “achieve more time in power” and that there has been an “instrumentalization” of “some unprincipled union organizations on behalf of unscrupulous rectors and managers (…), who in collusion They allow the Administration to commit the worst irregularities against public institutions and resources without there being the slightest critical voice or opposition possible (…)”.

This caused many members to address the delegates of the Subdirectorate requesting explanations for being directly referenced.

In this regard, the subdirectorate rejected the statements, pointing out that the content of the statement issued by the National Assembly was NOT submitted for approval or review by the delegates present at the event, which is why no clarifications could be made to the text.

“The Santa Marta Subdirectorate vehemently rejects the statements set forth in the aforementioned sections of the statement, which are biased,” they mentioned.

Likewise, they demanded respect for the accusations made by the subdirectorates of Cartagena and Cali.

“We specify that as Santa Marta Subdirectorate we have full knowledge of the functions of a true class union; At the same time, we categorically reject the accusations of instrumentalization, clarifying that we do NOT have any influence from the employers in our decisions and positions,” the locals added.

Finally, they urged them to present to the local subdirectorate any complaints they have in their possession “about the alleged tendency of some rectors to propose regulatory reforms to prolong their time in power, as has been reported in various universities, including Magdalena.” .

Finally, they pointed out: “If the evidence is not sent, we demand respect for our Subdirectorate and we request the rectification of said document or the clarification of the information expressed and what is the source on which they based themselves to include the University of Magdalena in said statement”.
