A new intersection has arisen between members of the Historical Pact and the opposition, due to the transfer of the statue of César Rincón, a renowned and historic Colombian bullfighter located in the vicinity of the Duitama bullring, Boyacá.

The dismantling of this sculpture was attended by the director of the Department of Social Prosperity, Gustavo Bolívar, and the senator of the Historical Pact, Esmeralda Hernández, Author of the bill banning bullfights that was approved in the Congress of the Republic.

Why was the statue of César Rincón removed?

According to the mayor of Duitama, José Luis Bohórquez, the decision was made as part of the transformation process of this space which will be a ““peasant market, art and culture” scenario to reconvert the bullrings.

Along the same lines, in dialogue with El Tiempo, Bohórquez spoke about the permits to remove the statue and indicated that the figure was located on a property that was handed over to the Institute of Recreation and Sports. “In that order of ideas, the mayor’s office manages and has the right of ownership over those assets and over what is on those assets.“, said.

In addition, he assured that the municipality’s decree 434 authorized the Planning office to make decisions about the statues. However, he pointed out that the sculpture “presented an affectation in its structural and aesthetic part: The head of one of the characters was hanging with a stick, there was also a kind of fungus that was taking over the statue that has been abandoned for more than 20 years”.

Rejection of the removal of the statue of César Rincón

Although the mayor of Duitama assured that the statue will be intervened and located in another sector, the representative of the Democratic Center, Christian Garcés, expressed his rejection of said act and said that this is an example of how the Government wants to impose its progressive agenda.

“What happened in Duitama is a sad example of how this government imposes its progressive agenda. They tear down the statue of the bullfighter César Rincón and want to dictate through laws and violence what culture is in Colombia“, he wrote on his official ‘X’ account.
