First lady Verónica Alcocer denounced an alleged smear campaign against her in which officials from the government of her husband, President Gustavo Petro, would be involved.

In a letter addressed to the Attorney General, Luz Adriana Camargo, Alcocer requested that possible hate crimes and false information that, according to her, circulates with the support of people who work in government entities be investigated.

“I, Verónica del Socorro Alcocer García, identified as it appears at the bottom of my signature, acting in my own name and in the capacity of victim, respectfully come to your office in order to file a complaint regarding the conduct described below, which Possibly they are part of a systematic strategy of disinformation, an attack on human dignity, honor and good name, as part of an attack aimed at discrediting people and groups, affecting the credibility and trust of its recipients, through the dissemination of inaccurate content. and misleading”, can be read in the first part of the document.

The first lady maintains that she became aware on June 1, 2024, of circulating information that attempted to link her to acts of corruption or cover-up in the National Disaster Risk Management Unit (Ungrd). Alcocer claims that these rumors were designed to affect his reputation and, in turn, discredit Gustavo Petro’s government. “This smear campaign seeks to damage my good name and affect the government to which I belong,” he mentioned in his letter.

“On June 1, 2024, I became aware of information that was being circulated in various media outlets, in which it was intended to associate my name, image, role and function with alleged acts of corruption that allegedly occurred within the National Government. , specifically with the Ungrd,” he says.

He added that “within the content of the misleading information disseminated there, sand intends to relate my name to the recent news and actions carried out in relation to the Ungrd with the aim of affecting my good name and thereby discrediting the exercise of the National Government chaired by my husband Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego.”

Alcocer emphasized that this campaign is not external, but comes from within the government. He maintains that people belonging to government entities are behind the dissemination of this information.

The document sent to the attorney general specifies the urgency of investigating these acts, classified as hate crimes and dissemination of false news. Alcocer insisted that quick and effective measures be taken to clarify these facts. “I hope that this investigation begins immediately to safeguard my integrity and that of President Petro,” he stressed.

The first lady also announced that, in the coming days, she will announce the names of the people involved in what she describes as “montages” against her.

He indicated that since the “conduct reported has been carried out through the mass media, as well as due to or on the occasion of the provision of public service within the National Government, such behavior is aggravated under the terms of Art. 134 CN° 2 and 4 of CP III”.

Finally, he made it clear that “once the prosecutor and investigator are assigned, the legal team will be present to provide the EMP,” implying that they have a way to prove what they are denouncing.

So far, there has been no official response from the Colombian government or the attorney general regarding Alcocer’s request. However, this incident has already generated widespread media interest and could have significant repercussions on domestic politics.
