What disease causes protein in urine?

Under normal conditions, blood contains proteins, such as albumin, the most abundant protein in blood. The functions of proteins include helping to build bones and muscles, preventing infections, and controlling the amount of fluid in the blood.

There are different medical problems for which urine may contain high concentrations of proteins:

  • kidney failure
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • The pregnancy
  • preeclampsia

Some of the risk factors that increase the chance of having kidney failure are diabetes, high blood pressure, and a family history of kidney failure.

However, increased protein in the urine can also be related to other problems such as dehydration (not having enough water in the body), intense stress, exposure to very low temperatures, fever and very intense physical activity.

  • Frothy or bubbly urine
  • Swelling of the hands, feet, abdomen, or face
  • Urinate more frequently
  • Feeling of an upset stomach or vomiting
  • Nocturnal muscle cramps
