The number one in the world, Iga Swiatekwon the tournament WTA 1000 Madrid after a fight of more than three hours with the number two in the world Aryna Sabalenka.
Swiatek achieved his victory in three sets with results of 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 (9/7) to win the crown of the Madrid Masters.
Swiatek saved three match points for Sabalenka: the first two at 6 to 5 with her serve, and another in the decisive game, with 7 points to 6.
The Pole took revenge from a year ago when Sabalenka beat her in the Madrid final 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3.
Before meeting again at Roland Garros, Swiatek and Sabalenka should visit Rome next week.
Men’s final
The Russian Andrey Rublev, world number eight, will seek his first Madrid Masters 1000 title against the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, who entered the final after his Czech rival Jiri Lehecka withdrew due to injury.
The semifinal match between the two barely lasted half an hour, which is how long it took Lehecka, Rafael Nadal’s executioner in the round of 16, to notice some discomfort in a turn and go to the locker room with the doctor due to the problem in the lower part of his back, with the 3-3 match.
Andrey Rublev, who beat the American Taylor Fritz in the other semifinal by sets of 6-4 and 6-3.
