Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Edwin Díaz feels good physically and mentally, and very calm with his return to the team’s closer role.

NEW YORK – Edwin Díaz will return to the closer role for the New York Mets when he returns from the injured list on Thursday.

The struggling reliever has been sidelined since May 29 with a right shoulder impingement. Before going on the disabled list, he blew three straight save chances and four of five, and that didn’t even include a meltdown on May 18 in Miami when he blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning.

“For us to accomplish this, we’re going to need Díaz to be Edwin Díaz,” the Mets manager said Wednesday. Carlos Mendoza. “We’ve been trying to put the pieces back together for the last month. He feels good physically and mentally, very comfortable with his return to the closer’s position.”
