Carlos Adames was born as one of 35 siblings, but that did not stop the dreams that made him the 160-pound monarch of the World Boxing Council.

When you think about the sports history of the Dominican Republicthere is no way to overlook the significant number of baseball players that the small country in the middle of the Caribbean has produced, not only locally, but for Big leagues. For decades, Dominicans have been associated with high quality in baseball and this often causes other great athletes who shine significantly in other disciplines to be overlooked, however, that is not the story of Carlos Adames.

Known by the nickname “Bronco Horse”, the current middleweight monarch of the World Boxing Council (WBC)has been a fighter who has made his name by overcoming difficulties, from the very beginning of his life. Adames He is one of 35 brothers, born in Comendador, a municipality in the Elías Piña province, very close to the Dominican border with the Republic of Haiti, where a significant part of the population lives below the extreme poverty line.

This did not stop Adames, who since he was a child decided that he would chart his own path and that would be through boxing. In conversation with espn, the “Bronco Horse” revealed everything he had to go through to establish himself as one of the best Dominican boxers today.

I come from a very humble province of the Dominican Republic, very poor. Since I was little, I was always a rather mobile boy, but I chose the topic of boxing, practically, to defend myself.“, he began by saying Adames to ESPNbefore pointing out that his family played a fundamental role in his decision, pointing out that they instilled in him the idea that he had to be faithful to the path he chose and if his career would be boxing, he had to enter fully.

As a consequence of these teachings, to Adames Boxing was no longer simply an option, it was the opportunity he had to help his entire family overcome the difficulties they faced for years, so he had no room to fail.

Years later and after a hasty departure from the Dominican Boxing Team due to situations with its then president, Adames He leaned toward professionalism, which eventually led him to become interim middleweight champion of the WBC in 2023 and months later, the absolute champion.

For me it was a surprise, I was not expecting the call from the Council, but it happened on my birthday, in the middle of the celebration. I have a friend who even started crying when we found out about the decision that he would be absolute champion“, confessed the boxer.

A few days after his fight against Terrell Gaushafirst as absolute champion, Adames says he is physically and mentally in a great place, prepared for the fight, but revealed that even today, years after having started the boxing path, he continues to feel the same emotion and the same “butterflies” that at first, because of his desire to do things well in the ring, especially now that he is champion.
