NEW YORK — JD Martinez hit a two-run double, Edwin Díaz converted his first save opportunity since coming off the disabled list and the New York Mets held on to beat the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Friday.

In his second appearance in back-to-back nights since returning from a right shoulder impingement, Diaz worked his way out of trouble in the ninth inning. He allowed a leadoff single and a stolen base, then struck out facing slugger Manny Machado.

Second baseman Jeff McNeil made a surprising sliding play in the outfield to convert a hit by Colombian Donovan Solano for the second out. With a runner on third, Diaz fell behind Jake Cronenworth 3-1 but struck out with a 91 mph slider.

The star closer screamed and beat his chest with excitement after securing his sixth save of the season. Before going on the disabled list on May 29, he failed in three consecutive save opportunities and four of five, leaving his ERA at 5.40.

Sean Manaea (4-3) bounced back from back-to-back rough performances, and four Mets relievers combined to score zeros in four innings. New York only generated four hits, but still won for the seventh time in nine games.

For the Padres, Venezuelan Luis Arráez is 4-2.

For the Mets, Dominican Starling Marte is 3-1.
