Southmoreland gained a share of the Section 3-AAA title with a 12-2 victory Friday on the road at Yough.

The Lady Scots (13-2) and Ligonier Valley share first-place with 8-2 ​​records, although Ligonier Valley swept the season series.

“Absolutely, winning the section was one of our goals,” said Southmoreland coach Todd Bunner.

Southmoreland’s Makayla Etling continued her solid performance at the plate with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, a triple, two singles and seven RBI.

Kaylee Doppelheuer contributed three singles and an RBI in the victory. Taylor Doppelheuer and Riley Puckey both had a pair of singles and drove in a run.

Winning pitcher Maddie Brown allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three, and had two singles and an RBI.

“Our girls are smacking the ball. We need to stay focused and Maddie Brown can take us the rest of the way,” Bunner said.

Kylee Fisher took the loss. Kylee Odelli doubled for the Lady Cougars (7-4), who finished third in the section with a 6-4 record.

Elizabeth Forward 4, Ligonier Valley 0 — The Lady Warriors’ Shelby Telegdy scattered two hits and tossed her sixth-consecutive shutout in a victory over the playoff-bound Lady Rams.

Addy Nigut powered Elizabeth Forward (16-1) with two hits and two RBI. Julia Resnik also had two hits and scored two runs. Telegdy also had an RBI double.

Ligonier Valley, co-Section 3-AAA champions, go to 11-4 overall.

Brownsville 4, McGuffey 3 — Ava Clark struck out 11 as the Lady Falcons secured a Section 4-AAA playoff berth with the upset of McGuffey.

Brownsville (4-9) sits in fourth place with a 3-7 record. The Lady Falcons avenged an earlier 1-0 loss to McGuffey.

Brownsville’s Zaydee Downer had two singles, a double and two RBI.

Makenna Crothers struck out eight for McGuffey (8-2, 11-3). Crothers and Kaylee Ward both doubled.

Charleroi 1, Peters Twp. 0 — Kaylee Sypolt raced home with the game’s only run in the seventh inning in the Lady Cougars’ non-section win.

Maddie Lancy drove in the lone run for Charleroi (13-4). Emma Stefancik (double) and Ariahna Blouse (single) had Charleroi’s two hits.

Lyla Brunner pitched the final three innings in relief of Sofia Celaschi for the win.

Addie Brunette and Emerson Gatten both had two hits for Peters Twp. (4-13).

Frazier 14, Leechburg 0 — Addison Hiles led the way for the Lady Commodores as they secured a share of the Section 3-A title.

Hiles had 10 strikeouts, two singles, a triple and three RBI for Frazier (11-0, 11-0). Jayanna Ciferno finished with a single, double and two RBI, and Emilia Bednar contributed a single and triple.

Leechburg goes to 6-6 in the section and 9-7 overall.

Baseball

Brownsville 8, California 1 — The Falcons scored four runs in the top of the third inning and added four more in the fifth for a non-section road victory at California.

Harlan Davis sparked the Brownsville offense with a triple, two singles, and two RBI. Jon Vasbinder contributed a double, single and two RBI.

Hunter Pelehac went the distance for the win, allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Logan Hartley finished with a pair of singles.

Ringgold 5, Plum 0 — James Nash struck out five in 5.2 innings of work in the Rams’ non-section victory.

Andrew Sprinkle led the Rams (8-9) with a single, double and two RBI. Plum goes to 11-6 overall.
