Authorities said the survivor is recovering well and sustained only minor injuries

A man was miraculously found alive five days after an under-construction building collapsed in South Africa on May 6, afternoon.

According to Voice of America, officials in a statement reported that a five-story under-construction building in the eastern Cape Town city of George, South Africa, collapsed on Monday afternoon while an 81-person crew was on site.

Of these, 13 have been confirmed dead, 29 were alive, and a further 39 remain unaccounted for.

After Monday’s collapse, rescuers used cranes, frills and their bare hands to try to reach those trapped, hoping for a miracle when a miracle happened.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, in a post on X (previously Twitter), announced that a survivor had been successfully rescued from the debris after 116 hours on Saturday.

Winde said, “It is a miracle that we have all been hoping for.”

The head of rescue operations, Colin Deiner, told reporters, “When we went down to the side of the slab we had uncovered, we heard someone inside, and we stopped all the heavy operations.”

Deiner further added that the rescuers then called out to the survivor, and he spoke back. “He indicated to us that he’s got weight on his legs, and we’re very concerned about that after such a long period of time.”

As per the authorities, 32-year-old construction worker Gabriel Guambe sustained minor injuries and is recovering well.

In a video shared by the municipality, Guambe said, “I’m okay now, I’m okay now. Everything is okay. Thank you, God bless you guys.”
