Rowlands was married to cult independent filmmaker John Cassavetes. The actress starred in ten of his films, earning Oscar nominations for two of them: A Woman Under The Influence (1974) and Glory (1980). Cassavetes died in 1989.

The actress also won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1977 for Opening Night, another Cassavetes film. Another of the great milestones of her career was starring in Another Woman by Woody Allen in 1988.
