The directorrevealed the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The situation is particularly unusual since he directed his mother playing a woman with dementia in The Notebook of 2004.

“I asked my mom to play Allie, the oldest, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be real with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s“said the filmmaker. “She is in full dementia. And she is crazy: we lived it, she acted and now she depends on us”.
Rowlands was married to cult independent filmmaker John Cassavetes. The actress starred in ten of his films, earning Oscar nominations for two of them: A Woman Under The Influence (1974) and Glory (1980). Cassavetes died in 1989.
The actress also won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1977 for Opening Night, another Cassavetes film. Another of the great milestones of her career was starring in Another Woman by Woody Allen in 1988.
