UK considers sending troops for humanitarian aid in Gaza from new floating port

As announced by official sources in the United Kingdom government, the option of deploying English troops to provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians from the floating port that the United States is building off the coast of Gaza is being analyzed. In that sense, it would be taken into account that English military personnel, who are already providing logistical support in the construction, would be deployed to drive vehicles that transport aid.

The aforementioned port, which has been under construction since mid-March, was presented by President Joe Biden during the State of the Union address earlier this month and aims to provide humanitarian aid in front of the Gaza Strip. This will provide, according to the Pentagon, utilize the Joint Logistics Over-The-Shore, or JLOTS, capability to construct a floating dock-like staging point, as well as a dock that extends ashore, for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.

The U.S. Army and Navy will use the same structure they used during exercises like last year’s Talisman Saber, a joint U.S.-Australian exercise in which the 7th Transportation Brigade and Naval Beach Group 1 joined together to establish a discharge facility and causeway.

This project comes after a report was published indicating that the United States would not send troops to the ground and that another nation would provide the personnel to drive the delivery trucks to the coast. The construction of the Gaza port and jetty also comes as Israel faces widespread international criticism for the slow trickle of aid to the Palestinian territory, where, according to the United Nations, at least a quarter of the population is on the brink. of starvation.

This decision, which is still only on paper, remains to be examined by troops who are part of the United States Central Command and Cyprus. This second location will be the point from where the ships with humanitarian aid will set sail.

The construction of this dock, which involves the participation of more than 1,000 United States troops, is expected to facilitate the delivery of 2 million meals a day to Palestinian citizens by mid-May. On the other hand, according to what was revealed by the BBC, the United Kingdom will provide ships to accommodate the military, American and marine personnel who will be stationed at this dock.
