It’s tempting to get carried away with the excitement of castor oil, but it’s worth digging a little deeper. Is this humble product as powerful as some people suggest? Can it really make hair grow back when applied topically? And if so, how fast? Following, the dermatologists analyze the effectiveness of castor oil for hair growth.
There is no scientific evidence to indicate that castor oil promotes hair growth or increases hair thickness.
Every dermatologist we surveyed said the same thing: There’s no scientific proof that castor oil promotes hair growth. “Most of the evidence on the effectiveness of castor oil in promoting hair growth is anecdotal,” said the Dr. Michele Green, specializing in Cosmetic Dermatology in New York City. “We have no definitive evidence to indicate that castor oil can stimulate hair growth on the scalp or eyebrows.”
“Castor oil will not increase the number of hair follicles nor the diameter of the hair,” added the Dr TN Rekha Singha dermatologist based in India.
Castor oil is beneficial for hair care
Although there is no direct relationship between castor oil and hair growth, dermatologists say it may provide other benefits. “Castor oil contains ingredients such as ricinoleic acid and fatty acids that exert a moisturizing and nourishing action on the hair,” stated the Dr. Lori Ramíreza Utah-based dermatologist.
According to Green, castor oil also has anti-inflammatory properties that help improve circulation and stimulate hair follicles. That means more nutrients and oxygen will reach your hair follicles, so your hair will be less prone to breakage.
Too much castor oil can be bad
Whatever you do, don’t soak your hair in castor oil. “Castor oil is a very thick and sticky substance,” explained Ramírez, who warned that using too much can have a negative effect. “When you use a lot of castor oil tangles occur and the hair becomes matted. In these cases the hair becomes irreversibly tangled and must be cut,” added Ramírez.
Not all castor oil is the same
As castor oil has gained popularity, it has become more accessible.
