The consultant Drewry showed, through his World Container Index, that rates continue to be driven upward for another week with a growth of 2% in the composite index that stood at $4,801 per 40-foot container in the measurement delivered this Thursday. The figure is 202% higher than the same week last year.

The value, on the other hand, is 238% higher than the average rates for 2019, which is taken as the reference year due to the exceptional disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In that period, the amount collected averaged $1,420.

The average composite rate so far this year is USD 3,443 per 40-foot container, which is USD 707 more than the 10-year average rate of USD 2,736 (which was inflated by the 2020-22 Covid exceptional period).

Shipping rates from Shanghai to Genoa and Rotterdam to Shanghai increased by 3% to $6,862 and $661 per 40-foot container, respectively.

Similarly, fares from Shanghai to Rotterdam and New York to Rotterdam rose 2% to $6,177 and $640 per feu, respectively.

Similarly, rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles and Shanghai to New York increased 1% to $6,025 and $7,299 per 40-foot box, respectively.

In contrast, rates from Rotterdam to New York decreased by 1% or $18 to $2,118 per FEU. Meanwhile, fares from Los Angeles to Shanghai remain stable.

Drewry detailed that he expects freight rates from China to continue rising next week due to congestion issues at Asian ports.
