Mahamat, in a statement, urged stakeholders to remain calm and refrain from further acts of violence as well as engage in constructive dialogue to address the contentious issues that gave rise to the protests in the best interest of the African country.

He reiterated the full solidarity of the continental organization with the Kenyan government and people and urged them to maintain peace, security and stability in the country.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, also spoke on the subject the day before, expressing his sadness at the reports of deaths and injuries that occurred during the protests in Nairobi.

Guterres called on the Kenyan government to exercise restraint in dealing with protesters against the tax hike bill.

According to official sources, the number of protesters killed during the storming of the Parliament of that African nation this Tuesday increased to eight, while the number of injured as a result of police shooting is still unknown.

The participants in the protests against the bill being debated at that time entered the headquarters of that institution and set fire to premises while the pro-government deputies were evacuated from the place.

Meanwhile, the KTN television network denounced pressure and threats from the government to suspend its news broadcasts and added that they were committed to the public interest and would continue their work.

The protest escalated after the approval of the tax reform project with 195 votes in favor, 106 against and three invalid votes.

Although the sponsors eliminated the increase in value added tax on bread and vehicle ownership and promised to review others, the proposed regulations were rejected by the population and are paralyzed awaiting final approval by Kenyan President William Ruto.

The latter called for establishing a dialogue to find a ground of understanding between the respective positions, but it was insufficient to cool down the spirits and the sponsors of the street marches also announced the possibility of a general strike to assert their demands.
